The Battle at San Jacinto Highland Games was a wild mix of competing and photographing for me this year. It was only my second time shooting a Highland Games event and this time I was doing it between my own throws. Most of the photos came from my class in the Mens B group and from my wife's class in the Masters Women division with a few extra moments from other athletes when I could sneak them in. It was hot and humid out there but everyone pushed through and the energy stayed high all day.


There is something really fun about capturing these events from the inside. You get to feel the intensity of each throw while also catching the small moments of encouragement and laughter that happen between events. Even with the heat and the constant back and forth between athlete mode and photographer mode I walked away with a set of images that really show the spirit of the games and the people who love them.
