I'll be honest, most of my subjects don't lick their own nose mid-shot or decide that right now is the perfect time to investigate a suspicious smell in the grass. But Fitz is not most subjects. Fitz is a Scottish Terrier with tens of thousands of social media followers, a whole lot of personality, and exactly zero interest in your directions. My wife and I own two Scotties ourselves, so when Fitz's owner Cindy reached out through our shared groomer Linda (shoutout to Linda, truly the connector of worlds), I figured I had a leg up. I knew the breed. I knew the Scottitude. What I did not fully account for was that Fitz, specifically, operates on his own schedule. We hit multiple spots around Berry Springs Park in Georgetown, and every single one of them was basically a negotiation. A very adorable, very photogenic negotiation.


Here's what dog photography taught me in a hurry: you cannot direct a dog the way you direct a person. You can't ask Fitz to "give me something natural." He IS natural. Constantly. The job becomes less about posing and more about reading the moment, staying ready, and trusting your gear to lock focus on a subject who may decide to bolt toward a tree at any given second. My camera had to earn its keep out there, tracking a fuzzy little torpedo with a beard and strong opinions. The shots that came out best weren't the ones I planned. They were the ones I was ready for when Fitz just happened to be Fitz.
