Let me paint you a picture: spinning fire, drones buzzing overhead, a crew of photographers all scrambling to figure out the shot, and me sweating through my settings trying to make all of it work at once. That was my evening at Verge Aero in Buda, TX shooting with the incredibly talented Kacey as she put together a promo shoot for her upcoming fire and drone show. It was chaotic in the best possible way. The kind of shoot that makes you love photography and also question every decision you've ever made, all within the same five minutes.


The technical side of this one was genuinely a puzzle. I wasn't just trying to capture fire, which already wants to blow out your exposure the moment you look at it funny. I was also shooting drones that needed a long zoom to look appropriately massive and dramatic, and I needed to freeze all that motion at the same time. So yeah, it was a lot of off-camera flash experimentation, shutter speed wrestling, and muttering to myself between bursts. Totally normal photographer stuff. The part that made it all worth it was the end of the session when I got to slow down and do individual portraits of the performers. That's where the real magic happened for me. Getting to capture genuine poses and emotion up close, after all that controlled chaos, felt like a reward for surviving the rest of it.
