Every once in a while I get to shoot something that reminds me photography is basically a very expensive way to test your reflexes, and my recent session with the young performers at Lache Movement Co in Austin, TX was exactly that. This was an aerial silks and ground acrobatics performance, short but absolutely stacked with talent, and these kids were doing moves that would have sent my spine into early retirement. Backbends, silk drops, splits mid air, the works. I stood there the whole time thinking "please don't do that" and "please do that again so I can nail the shot" at the same time.
The real challenge on shoots like this isn't the cute factor, it's the physics. Low ambient light plus fast, unpredictable motion is basically a stress test for a photographer's gear and instincts. You have to nail focus on a moving target, freeze the action without turning it into a blurry ghost photo, and still catch the expression and energy that makes the shot feel alive. It's the kind of session that keeps you sharp, and honestly it's my favorite kind!
If you run a studio, gym, or performance group in the Austin area and want photos that actually capture the energy of what your performers can do instead of a stiff lineup shot, that's exactly what I do. Head to my contact form and get in touch about booking a session for your next performance, recital, or showcase.
