I'll be honest with you: baby and toddler shoots are not exactly my comfort zone. I spend most of my time photographing concerts, corporate events, and aerial fire spinners, so when Virginia reached out to bring her sister Mary Anne and their two little ones out to Berry Springs Park in Georgetown for a family portrait session, I was equal parts excited and quietly terrified. Babies, man. They don't take direction well.


Turns out I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Virginia, whose headshots I had done just a few weeks before this, showed up with Mary Anne and two of the most photogenic toddlers I've ever had the pleasure of chasing around. I'm not exaggerating when I say these kids were easy to photography. Great expressions, and cooperative energy that I usually only get from adults who have been professionally photographed before. Berry Springs Park gave us beautiful shade and soft natural light, and while we had to get a little creative keeping the sun behind them, the portraits came out wonderfully lit without a single flash or reflector in sight. Just good light, great people, and two babies who apparently missed the memo that toddler shoots are supposed to be chaotic.


This was one of those sessions that reminded me why I love doing what I do. Family portraits at outdoor locations like Berry Springs give you something that no studio setup can fake: real, natural moments between real people.
